CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cory

John is driving, flying would be a more accurate description, especially with this snow storm. Chet Reynolds and two of the Johnson boys are following them in their truck.

“This is fucking bullshit,” Cory growls angrily. He’s riding in the back. Derek and Kelly are in the Suburban, as well. They aren’t sure how many men are attacking Samantha’s home, but it sounded bad. They’ve left Reagan, her father, Doc and Sue at the house to keep watch. They’ve also armed Justin and Huntley, who are both great shots for being such young kids. This is the same shit that happened before when the guys were fighting the Target group while he was gone. They don’t want the assholes flanking them and attacking the farm while they are on their way to kick their asses. With her father there and Sam’s home not far from the farm, they made a quick decision for all four of them to go together.

“No shit,” Derek says. “This is crazy. Who the hell would be after them?”

They were out the drive within minutes, but to Cory, it seems to be taking forever to get there. The weather has turned to shit. John has nearly zero visibility on the back gravel road. They are armed to the hilt and ready to take on just about anything.

“We’re less than three miles from there,” Kelly says. “Everyone stay cool. We’ll have to par…”

Suddenly John hits something in the road, interrupting Kelly’s planning. And he hits it hard, causing them to careen sideways on the snow-covered gravel road and be slammed into from the rear by Chet who is driving the other vehicle. John tries to maintain control, but with the snow and mud, they slide into a ditch.

“What the fuck was that?” Derek yells as they come to a jarring stop.

“Bear,” Kelly says.

“Yeah, it was a bear, a black bear,” John says. “Everyone ok?”

“Yeah, we’re good,” Cory says as they exit the vehicle, which now has smoke coming from under the hood.

“Damn it,” Kelly swears as he opens his door.

Cory has to climb out Derek’s side because his door is pinned to the steep, dirt bank beside them. John has to do the same in the front seat.

“Son of a bitch,” Kelly yells as they regroup with their gear.

Chet runs over to them, “Sorry, man. Everyone ok?”

“We’re fine. You guys?” Derek asks.

“Yeah, but the truck’s fucked, man,” he says. “It won’t restart.”

“And ours isn’t comin’ outta that ditch,” Kelly says, observing the wreckage.

He’s right, though. The SUV is buried in the ditch nearly three feet up its side. There’s no way they’re digging it out without Doc’s tractor.

“Goddamn it!” Derek yells. “Everyone, move out! We’re runnin’ in.”

They grab their packs and wait for Chet’s group to do the same. Some of their items are scattered on the road since their cargo was in the pick-up truck bed.

Without question, Cory starts jogging without them. He isn’t about to leave Sam and Simon with their asses hanging out in that mansion.
